Hello SOTGC community,
Navigating the workforce can be stressful, especially if you feel you’re stuck in a career rut. If you’re happy with your job as a whole but feel you need to make some changes in order to be happier in the day-to-day, there are some things you can do to turn it around, and the good news is that most of them don’t require much effort.
Busy lives competing with busy workdays make for headaches, but if you can find small ways to make things easier on yourself–and practice self-care–having a successful career that you enjoy is possible. Here are some of the best tips for spicing up your career and pulling out of that rut.
If you’re feeling bored or underappreciated, it might be time to go to your boss and ask for a different set of responsibilities. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone and tackle something new. You might be terrible at it; that’s okay! Give yourself credit for trying and move on to the next challenge. Finding something new to do–even if it’s only for a small portion of the day, outside of your normal responsibilities–can help you feel excited about work again.
Get to know your co-workers
Sometimes, the only way to get through a particularly bad day is having someone around who knows exactly what you’re going through. If you aren’t already friendly with the people you work with, make an effort. You likely spend more time with them than you do your own family, and if you can’t find some common ground outside of your work duties, life will be that much more difficult. Make a lunch date with someone or invite some of your colleagues to a local happy hour.
It’s hard to like a job if you go into the office every day with a negative attitude, so try to stay positive and keep away from co-workers who bring the mood down. Set daily goals and treat yourself when you get them all taken care of, even if it’s just a glass of wine when you get home.
Get plenty of rest
Getting good rest is imperative when you have a full schedule ahead of you, so make it a point to create a soothing, comfortable space in your bedroom. Consider taking out the television and banning laptops from the room, especially since screen time right before bedtime can negatively affect sleep. If you feel it necessary to bring work home with you, set a schedule for home the same way you do at the office. Working late into the night can leave you feeling exhausted and cranky, and it also blurs the line between relaxing home time and the stress of that inbox. Try to define and separate as much as possible.
Spice up your resume
It could be that you’ve simply gone as far as you can go at your current company. And that’s ok. If so, it’s time to update your resume and start your job search. Certainly, you’ll want your resume to include information about your most impressive job experience. But you can also add a personal touch by including a personal branding statement. It’s a great way to sum up your greatest strengths while also infusing your resume with a little bit of your unique personality. Resumes can be very dry reads, especially for recruiters who look at them all day. A personal branding statement might help you catch their attention.
Make your wardrobe work for you
It’s almost a universal truth that wearing a piece of clothing that makes you feel confident–whether it’s stilettos or a sharp blazer–can help you feel more successful at work, so having a wardrobe that works for you is important. It’s not necessary to spend thousands of dollars on all new clothing, however. A few key pieces are all you need to change things up and help you feel like the powerful being you are.
–Colorful statement necklaces are great ways to spice up a darker, more serious ensemble.
–A blazer can make even the simplest white blouse and slacks look more grown-up and pulled together.
–Don’t be afraid of patterns and textures, especially in fall and winter. When done correctly, they can add visual interest and still remain sensible. Tartan plaids and even leather can be worn in the office if you do it one piece at a time.
–Scarves and shoes can be the perfect way to pull together an outfit you’ve worn before in a different way. Never underestimate the power of accessories.
–Consider changing up your makeup routine. A heavy hand is never recommended for the office, but even a change in lipstick color can go a long way in helping you feel renewed
