Hello SOTGC community,
I don’t know about you, but I certainly know that life is much better when I feel alive and vibrant! My mood is better, I am more productive, and everything just seems a whole lot easier.
As a solopreneur AND a mom (to a male toddler!), energy can be hard to come by sometimes. Okay, who am I kidding … it’s hard to come by most of the time!
Since I know what a difference abundant energy can make, I’d like to share six simple tips that have helped me (and my clients) stay energized throughout the day. Aside from getting a good night’s sleep, which isn’t always easy, these strategies can do wonders:
1 – Choose Gratitude
This one is a biggie!
The thoughts that we choose can have a profound impact on how we feel – and notice that I said choose. We have complete control over our thoughts, even though that may seem like an unrealistic idea. The trick is that we have to be conscious of them.
I like to start my day by thinking of three things I am grateful for – this helps me infuse some positive energy into my whole being. Starting off on a positive note helps keep me grounded in positivity throughout the day.
I’m sure we’ve all woken up some mornings with the following thoughts:
“Ugh, I’m soooooo tired.” “I don’t want to get out of bed.” “I have such a busy day.” “I hope I don’t get stuck in traffic.”
And it just keeps going. And we do it all day.
Now let me ask you this – do you feel energized after thinking those thoughts? I’d be shocked if you did. When we focus on the negative aspects of our day (better thought of as the “challenging” aspects), it can certainly bring us down. And we want to stay UP!
Whenever you notice this kind of thought pattern, choose to shift gears and think about things that make you happy and choose gratitude.
2 – Drink More Water
Did you know that dehydration is a leading cause of fatigue? I notice a huge difference in my energy levels when I get so busy that I forget to drink water.
Our bodies produce energy at the cellular level, and without water, this process isn’t as effective. Just like you get thirsty, so do your cells, and they need water to be able to do a good job.
One of the best things you can do for yourself upon waking up, after your gratitude exercise of course, is to drink a tall glass of room temperature water (adding lemon will give your body a great detox boost). Since your body hasn’t been given fluids throughout the night, it’s important to get that liquid in ASAP to ensure optimal functioning.
Unfortunately, the first thing most people drink in the morning is coffee. And that leads me to my next tip ….
3 – Reduce Caffeine Intake (and/or Energy Drinks)
Yup, that’s right, I am suggesting that perhaps you might not want to indulge in your cup of coffee first thing. Ok, I know what you’re thinking … “What?!? But that’s exactly what I need to give me my morning energy!!!”
While it may be true that you might get a good morning jolt from your caffeinated beverage of choice, it’s not the best strategy, and here’s why…
Most caffeinated beverages are, at the very least, slightly dehydrating. When you are coming off of your nightly liquid fast, the last thing you want to do to your body is dry it out even further. Remember, dehydration causes fatigue.
In addition, that buzz will wear off, and then you will likely find yourself in a bit of a slump. Your body will then want the high back, so the tendency is to want to get another cup, thus beginning the caffeine yo-yo.
The other common thing that people do when the caffeine high wears off is reach for a carb-heavy snack, which leads me to my next point …
4 – Choose Balanced Meals and Snacks
While I could write an entire dissertation on this one, I told you these energy tips were going to be easy, so I am going to keep it simple …
When you reach for a snack (or your meal), try to include the three major nutrient groups, and by those I do not mean crackers, chips, or chocolate. If only!
Carbohydrates (40%), Protein (30%), and Fats (30%), are the three things that should be a part of every meal or snack. Your energy will be maintained at a much more balanced level if you include all three, and almost in equal portions.
And do your best to choose complex carbs (lots of veggies, fruits, whole grains, beans, etc.), lean proteins, and healthy fats … a white bagel, donut, or candy bar will only keep you on the energy roller coaster.
A good example of a balanced snack would be veggies or crackers (Mary’s Gone Crackers are a personal favorite, and Oprah’s too … they are gluten-free, vegan, and very tasty) with hummus.
5 – Move Your Body
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how important exercise is for good health. And while I suggest getting regular exercise to help keep you energized, what I am talking about here is far more basic – commit to simply moving your body.
Most of us do a whole lot of sitting all day long … we sit down on our commute, we sit down at our desks at work, sit down for lunch and dinner, and then sit or lie down in the evening.
You will do wonders for yourself and your energy levels if you make a habit of getting up at least once an hour to move … walk down the hall (or go outside for a little stroll), get up and stretch, do some jumping jacks, put on a song and have a little quickie dance party … just move.
6 – Breathe
The good news is that you are already doing this one … see, I told you the tips would be easy!
Just like your cells need water to function optimally, they also benefit from a healthy dose of oxygen! In the same way that taking a few deep breaths can bring about relaxation and bring you into the present moment, the same practice can also give you energy as well … not the “bouncing off the walls” kind of energy that caffeine does, but a much more balanced energy.
If you really want to supercharge the effect, go outside and breathe … the fresh air will do wonders and help you feel refreshed from the often stagnant indoor air.
I am confident that you if you try some of these suggestions, you’ll be able to enjoy more energy throughout your day and live better as a result!
