Hello SOTGC community,
Last time we talked about the importance of strategy to move your career ahead. This post is about figuring out WHAT strategy is in place, and how this will help further your career goals.
Most companies either have a “town hall meeting” with the CEO that gives updates on what the company has been doing and what they are looking at for the future. If your company doesn’t have this, then most likely this update is given via an email that goes out quarterly by your division head. Pay close attention to what departments are continuously being praised for their growth or innovation, and what departments never make it to the “mention” category in these calls or meetings. Then pay attention to what is talked about for the future of the company.
The most strategic members in the top executive level will take these goals to heart, and start building a team (if one isn’t already in place) that will launch projects to help the company achieve these goals. Pay attention to which divisions, people, and managers get called in to launch these projects, and then monitor the progress.
By simply being observant and paying attention to what’s going on in the macro view of your company, you can quickly figure out WHO is playing WHAT strategy, and see what’s working and what isn’t. This isn’t something that’s done overnight. To truly figure out the overall strategy going on in your company, you need to be paying close attention for months to be able to pick up patterns of success and failure.
If you want to move forward with the goals you have set for your career, then start paying attention now to the strategy being played around you. Next week we’ll talk about how to align yourself strategically with a winning player in the game.
