Hello SOTGC community,
If you’re like most ambitious individuals, your long-term goals will remain the same, but your short-term goals could (and should) shift and change as opportunities come your way. While it’s important to visualize what a successful and happy future is, it’s even more important not to get tunnel vision and ignore great opportunities that present themselves along the way.
To give you an example, my long-term goal for success and happiness is to create forums where people can have access to resources and information that could help better their lives. This is why I founded Stilettos on the Glass Ceiling. I also got into sales so that I could help people by providing connections and resources they might not normally know about or have access to. Had you asked me what my short-term career goals were six months ago, and what they are now, you’d see a big difference. The reason is because as I have increased my knowledge base and network value, moving forward towards my “big picture” goal, I have been introduced to people who offered opportunities that I didn’t even know were available to me six months ago.
The most important thing to remember when you assess a new opportunity is to ask yourself two things:
- Am I aware of all that I will give up by taking this new path?
- Does this new opportunity still align with the big picture vision of success and happiness that I have defined?
If you can’t answer an emphatic YES to both of these questions, then thank the person for the opportunity, and continue moving forward towards achieving your overall goals. Be confident knowing that another amazing opportunity will come your way.
