Hello SOTGC community,
Millennial and Proud! – Yes I am about to join the slew of already existing millennials defending my fellow Gen-Y peers because, quite frankly, the world has got us misunderstood! The Millennial generation has dealt with a lot of not-so-nice accusations and claims about our generation. Categorized as self-absorbed, lazy, and shallow “children,” I can’t help but disagree with the notions the world might have regarding millennials. Gen-Y made me and my peers, many of whom are key players in the changing professional environment. Heck, you’ve got 23-year-old CEO’s and creators of multimillion-dollar companies and brands – all millennials.
So I’m here to dispel a few of these “Millennial Facts” that have been circulating the web for my Gen-Y community.
1. We aren’t disengaged and distracted: We just like to believe in the work that we do. Millennials are fueled by purpose; we have to feel passionate about the work we are doing and understand why we are doing it.
2. We aren’t tech-dependant, we’re tech-savvy! Sure, we probably check our Instagram feed at least 10 times a day, and/or are avid Twitter users, but in addition to being immersed in social media, we’re a lot more familiar with technology than our pre-existing colleagues are. This benefits the companies we work for, in an age where technology and its professional use is ever-changing, it pays to have individuals proficient in the language of tech.
3. We aren’t for self, we thrive in team settings: We’re all about collaborative partnership when it comes to getting the work done. We tend to be creative in the way that we work with individuals, we understand that value that lies in being able to work together. So it isn’t always that we’re afraid to tackle projects by ourselves, we just believe in the age-old adage: two heads are better than one.
Millennials could be considered the most creative and innovative generation of all time; we may not have dealt with the same issues our elders have, but we’ve been able to carve out unique and creative methods to living both our professional and personal lives. We play on our own field and time instead of conforming to pre-existing norms about what it means to be successful.
Being apart of the Millennial generation has shown me the many feats I am capable of accomplishing. While every generation has it’s share of unmotivated individuals, I can confidently say that I am inspired and empowered by the majority of my fellow millennials. Millennials are the future of progress for the global community, our innovative outlook on life coupled with our fuel for purpose makes us a game-changing society!
