Hello SOTGC community!
Some summers allow us to escape for months at a time to foreign lands. Other summers call for being closer to home. One of the joys of discovering a new area or country is the novelty in seeing everything for the first time. And yet, I believe that with a bit of creativity and effort, one can recreate that same feeling in one’s own city; here’s to playing tourist and making a summer close to home a tad more exciting this year!
Here are a couple of tips to help you rediscover your hometown through a truly new looking glass … see everything for the first time all over again!
Invite some family and friends to spend the weekend! Often, when we are in charge of showing visitors around, we end up naturally settling into the tourist role ourselves. Visitors who are new to a city often want to see all the major attractions, museums, and monuments that the city has to offer. Sometimes, as a native of a given city, we may spend years living in the same place without ever having had the opportunity to visit these typical touristy places. Have you lived in NYC for years without having experienced the view from the Empire State Building? Have you called Toronto home for decades without ever having stood on the glass floor of the CN tower? Having visitors around is the perfect opportunity to finally take part in these experiences! And if anyone ventures to call it cliché, just blame it on the tourists! Enjoy!
Take up photography! Experiencing a city you have called home for years through the lens of a camera can literally allow you to see your city in a whole new light. When the goal of a given outing is to capture photographs of the things around us, our minds become more aware of the architectural nuances of buildings, smiles of street vendors, vibrant colors of flowers, and reflection of sunlight off glass windows. Photography can allow you to gain a new and novel experience of your hometown! Give it a try!
Reviews and recommendations! We all have those familiar go-to restaurants and coffee shops that never leave us disappointed. Once in a while, however, play tourist and try something completely different! Whether it be asking the representative at the tourist office for restaurant recommendations or looking up reviews on local food blogs, enjoy the experience of trying something new this summer.
Sign up for a tour of your own city! It is wonderful to see tourist attractions, but part of discovery is also learning more about the city you call home! What better way to learn than join a tour for the day! Not only will you have the expert knowledge of a tour guide and the ease of having everything planned for you, but you will also be able to meet tourists from all over the world.
Our dearest readers, I hope this post has inspired you to play tourist in your hometown this summer and has convinced you that it is never too late to rediscover the city you call home! Enjoy!!
