Hello SOTGC community,
‘Tis the season to sooth, smooth, revitalize and protect! As spring thaws and ski resorts close to make way for summer fun parks, the sun begins to make its way to center stage. While the warmth on our skin and fresh breezes dancing about can feel a bit like heaven, our skin needs some extra protection that it won’t get in the form of long sleeves, winter gloves, and wool scarves lest we faint of over-heating and dehydration.
I could sum up this entire article in one strong sentence: Wear a lightweight, oil-free, broad-spectrum, physical (mineral) sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every day. Period. But that’s just no fun now is it?
I realize I’m talking to an educated bunch here, so I won’t be repetitious with all the fun science I love about why extended exposure to the sun is so damaging to our skin – you can read any number of tedious clinical studies and journals of medicine on the topic online. I will, however, give you an abbreviated summary in hopes of nudging you toward protecting your precious skin and melanin production every single day whether you’re a deeply bronzed beauty by nature or have the fairest of Ivory skin.
Aging can mean breakdown of our bodies’ highest functions at a cellular level if we do nothing to combat it and prevent disease. Our bodies, like the cars we drive and homes in which we live, require regular maintenance and seasonal rejuvenation sessions from the inside all the way out to our top most dermis layer. And sun is the number one skin ager.
What causes the skin to age? The natural aging process of the skin usually begins in our 20’s – bummer, I know. As the skin ages, its renewal rate slows. It becomes drier, less firm, and less radiant. Collagen and elastin production slows (think drooping, sagging, and less resilient). External factors such as sun exposure and environmental stresses like pollution can often accelerate the skin’s aging process.
Women of all ages and skin tones are concerned about the visible signs of aging, which include fine lines and wrinkles and the loss of skin firmness and elasticity. Baby boomers want to fight the signs of aging, while younger women want to delay them. How do we accomplish this? Use a system of age-fighting, skin-protecting products that works by collectively:
- Removing dead skin cells.
- Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Keeping the skin moist.
- Energizing skin.
- Protecting the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays and environmental stressors.
- Renewing the skin.
While UVB rays affect skin primarily between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., UVA rays (which can penetrate skin more deeply and cause it to age without you feeling its effects) work on your skin during all daylight hours. Therefore, doctors and beauty experts alike recommend daily use of sunscreen as incidental sun exposure every day compounds to create premature aging and increased risk for skin cancers.
If you’re on a quest to find the perfect sunscreen, don’t look too far – one doesn’t exist. The best sun protection is the one you like enough to use regularly and correctly based on how long you’ll be in the sun. However, knowing which SPF you need can help you avoid painful mishaps like the queen of sassy selfies, Kim Kardashian, experienced.
REI explains the SPF rating: “SPF = Sunburn Protection Factor. It’s a gauge of the product’s effectiveness against sunburn-causing ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. If you are outside for long stretches [more than two hours], choose SPF 30 or higher” recommends REI.com. Use SPF 50 during extended time in direct sun or at higher elevations. Broad spectrum sunscreens will protect against both UVA and UVB rays. And remember that even with sweat-resistant and water-proof formulas, you’ll need to reapply after emerging from the waves and wakes. These simply help to protect you further while you are enjoying the cool calm of the water or active fun. Using a formula that not only protects but helps to replenish the skin by maintaining hydration levels will keep your skin from itching and feeling tight and dry.
No matter your genetic makeup or skin color, EVERY PERSON needs to protect themselves from the sun. If you have deep or bronze toned skin, you may age more gracefully because you are blessed with thicker and better oil-producing facial skin than some of us, not because you are immune to sun damage.
