Hello SOTGC Community,
… And Hello Gorgeous! Today we are returning to one of my absolute favorite topics, the eyes. If you missed the first few tips check them out, Why Use Eye Creams, Smokey Eyes, and For My Eyes Only. Our eyes say a great deal about us and are excellent nonverbal communicators. We’re talking strictly about lashes today because they are sooooo in this season. Okay, lashes are NEVER out, but during spring and summer when our color cosmetics should take on lighter, fluffy hues, our lashes become our major statement makers.
Primers and curlers and falsies oh my! With an array of nourishing, volume-boosting, length-giving, and last-through-my-next-triathlon options, where does a savvy enchantress begin?
Determine your need for the day or special event. Whether you’re up to some regular maintenance or are a tried and true DIY’er, then follow these simple steps that, with a little practice, will make you a lash expert.
Who are you today?
- I want gorgeous, long, voluminous lashes and am willing to budget in time and investment for a professional to help me achieve them, OR I love to look great but hate to primp, OR I have extremely short and very straight, downward facing lashes:
Get semi-permanent eyelash extensions! They are beautiful, range from natural to dramatic looking and mean you never have to prime, curl or apply mascara again.
Eyelash extensions do require monthly touch-up maintenance, and you will have to be careful when removing eye color. You can get them in three materials; synthetic, silk and mink. From personal experience, the synthetic are less costly but feel stiff and irritated me. The silk and mink are so much softer and easier to get used to.
Get in the know before you head to your nearest lash spa with these Tips and be prepared to invest two hours and $100-$500 for your initial half or full set, then return for touch-ups at about $60 every three to four weeks.

I don’t mind a little work each day for great natural lashes: Do these three things every morning:
Curl: Choose between cool or heated eyelash curlers or use both (I do 🙂 )
Classic Cool curlers are used prior to primer. Start at the base of your lashes (careful not to pinch your skin or pull when squeezing the curler) squeeze three times, move to the center of your lashes – squeeze three times, move to the tips of your lashes – squeeze three times. This avoids the weird angular flip if you just crimp the base and gives you a full, natural curl. Use the same technique with a precision curler, which curls your lashes in small sections rather than the whole line at once and gives a deeper curl.
Heated curlers are used post mascara application to keep the curl longer and make it more dramatic. Apply mascara and let dry. Using your AAA battery-operated heated curler (it doesn’t get hot enough to burn) brush it slowly through your lashes from base to tip pressing up toward your lid to curl.
Lash curling really opens your eyes for a bright-eyed feminine and youthful look.

“Eyelash Curler” on Google Shopping.
*I’m not a fan of the bulky plastic eyelash curlers. They are awkward to use and don’t curl as well as the metal mechanical curlers in my experience.

Prime: Used as a basecoat for your mascara. It protects your lashes and offers several yummy benefits. Or wear the clear formula alone for a natural look.
- Instantly intensifies lash volume and creates longer-looking lashes.
- Lifts lashes and helps them stay curled longer.
- Coats without flaking, yet removes effortlessly.
- Helps mascara wear longer.
Pick your mascara and apply one good coat on both upper and lower lashes.
Definition: Use a formula that comes with a flexible, sculpted brush that defines, defends, and delivers four times the volume without looking overdone. This brush separates and coats even fine, hard-to-reach lashes so that they appear fuller, lifted, and multiplied while looking naturally flawless.
Volume: Bigger, bolder, longer-looking lashes with extreme volume from a full bristled brush.
Length: Lets your lashes stretch as long as they’ll go with a vitamin fortified formula to give soft, long, natural lashes.
Waterproof: A formula applied with a round bristled brush that delivers all day, triathlon-tested water resistance for longer, thicker looking lashes through your toughest workouts, sad movies or unexpected downpours.
All of it – Combine an ultra volume boosting formula and finish off with a defining waterproof formula to keep it in place.
*No matter your choice of mascara, ideally use formulas that contain a healthy vitamin complex of B5 and E to help strengthen and moisturize the hair as well as one that is at least water resistant to help keep it from running or flaking during the day.
