Hello SOTGC community,
Unless you are accustomed to being served, it can be difficult to know how to behave on these occasions. In situations such as having a car during a business trip, it is best to behave with charm and a touch of formality.
“Home please, Parker.”
So goes an exchange between Lady Penelope and her chauffeur Parker from the movie, The Thunderbirds.
The driver should introduce himself (or herself), especially if he will be with you for more than one trip. If he fails to do so, ask. It’s polite to know his name, as a plain “thank you” at the end of a lengthy journey might come across as a little self-important. It’s a mistake to treat a private car just as you would a taxi.
If you wish, engage in small talk. Drivers are a fountain of knowledge for local informationthe best restaurants, bars, and places to avoid. At the same time, do not feel guilty if you wish to be alone with your thoughts. Never be rude or dismissive.
Always leave the car tidy, and thank your driver. Drivers who are directly employed by your host or the company should not be patronised by tipping. If they are with a car service, a generous tip at the end of your visit is appropriate.
