Hello SOTGC community,
Before you build a career network of colleagues, co-workers, friends and mentors, know this–it’s not about the number of people in your network but the quality of people in your network. You may have numerous connections on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but on the job, it’s not about quantity, but quality, according to Martha Johnson, leadership expert, speaker and author of On My Watch-Leadership, Innovation and Personal Resilience. Martha states there are four questions you should ask yourself as you assess your network of trusted colleagues and mentors.
Do they confront you? Your inner circle, your network, should tell you when you’ve done well and when you’ve messed up! A strong and trusted network will do that for you because they know you’re capable of doing better. Their feedback will be easy to take because it will lift you up and not knock you down.
Do they comfort you? Maybe you’ve been passed by for a promotion or weren’t even considered! Either way–these moments show you who truly believes in you. The best network will help you realize this is a short-term situation and more opportunities will come – yes they will come!
Do they clarify? Do they help us grow and help us navigate through the corporate muck, and roadblocks that lie before us. Their advice can redirect your efforts and advance your career.
Do they celebrate with or for you! A true network celebrates the small and the large wins in your life! Your success is their success because they have invested in you. Don’t forget to celebrate who you are – celebration is affirmation for the brain that you are moving forward with the accomplishments you have realized.
Here’s to your success!
