Hello SOTGC community,
I am excited to be a contributor among such talented women.
Why is corporate wellness becoming such a buzz word in America? $153 Billion.
American companies lose approximately one hundred and fifty three billion dollars in healthcare costs. These dollars come from employees with chronic, preventable diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Chronic diseases are the most common and also the most costly. If Americans focused more on physical activity, healthy eating habits and other behavior modifications our healthcare costs would be significantly lower.
It’s not the ½ hour a day at the gym that is helping us, it’s the immobility at work that is hurting us. There is a direct connection between healthy employees and productivity. Although the majority of the costs are from our unhealthy workforce, we cannot forget about our healthy workforce and must reward them and encourage them to stay healthy.
This is a marathon, not a sprint. You cannot have a month long wellness initiative and think that you are making a change. Wellness programs are not a project, they are a culture change. You cannot put a changed person back into his old environment and expect the change to hold. You need to assess your environment. If you are going to offer a wellness program, you need to offer it to all. Including remote employees and those with health conditions. If they are unable to comply, you must provide a reasonable alternative. Key points for wellness programs to be successful. Learning & education, continuous improvement, encouragement, rewarding. It is also important to analyze your results. You can create what results will satisfy you. Is it happiness, lack of absenteeism, employee engagement, teamwork, lower healthcare costs? Use the same analysis system the next year to track properly.
There is no such thing as insignificant improvement.
