Hello SOTGC community,
We are all entrepreneurs in our own way, following our hearts as well as contributing to the passions of others. I have begun my journey into the world of writing and publishing children’s literature. My books nurture community and connection within their readers. My first book, All Are Family, is a celebration of the diversity of our global family. It is currently up on Kickstarter with 3 days remaining to reach its financial goal; 88% funded, the campaign has $1000 to go. There are wonderful rewards for pledging, including a first-edition hardcover for $25. Please consider taking a moment to pop over, watch the video and help me reach my goal. We have until December 15th; together, we can make this happen.
On Friday December 13, 2013 Marissa officially hit her goal! Thank you to all who supported her on this journey and we are SOOOO looking forward to her book!

You ask what is KickStarter and why should you donate? Read on to find out…
“A community has the power to well exceed a corporation. Crowd-funding calls people to join together and realize the sheer volume of their collective voice; it resonates in their hearts and minds, inspiring them towards greatness.”
My journey into community-funding first started with a suggestion from a friend. We were discussing the financial challenges I faced, in self-publishing my books, and he introduced KickStarter to me as a viable option. I agreed to look into it, but honestly, I inwardly balked and thought a big huge “Yuck!” Thinking about it conjured images of those unwelcomed late night phone solicitations, most always uncomfortable; I KNEW I didn’t want to be put in the position to ask people for money to publish my book. Despite my obvious distaste, I visited KickStarter to see for myself, and the rest is history.
Browsing through projects (KickStarter’s term for a campaign) I felt inspired by the sheer magnitude of possibilities when a crowd joins together for a common purpose. The first project I backed was a doll for those living with Down syndrome. I was touched by the story, impressed by the vision and fully understood that I could truly be a part in bringing this to reality – how could I pass up this opportunity!? Days later, when that project funded, I discovered that one woman, supported by a community, had the power to create what I previously thought only big corporations could achieve. These children will soon have quality dolls, dreamed-up and brought to reality by a community who appreciates and celebrates them for who they are.
Since that first KickStarter experience, I have backed 11 more projects; some for a reward, others to purely show my support and be a part of the journey. Among them, hand-crafted shoes, small batch seasoning salt, two films, toy blocks, and several books. The rewards are one aspect which I think sets community-funding sites, like KickStarter, apart from a traditional fundraiser or charity benefit. In many campaigns, like my own, these rewards offered are equal to or greater in value than the monetary amount asked to redeem them. This is exactly what makes KickStarter a viable option for creators and backers to bring projects to life. It is a platform for people with ideas to reach those who are interested in them. Backers are essentially placing their order ahead of time so that their money can be used to produce their product – for my project, this is the book. I have enjoyed being a part of the process for each of these; watching as projects unfold through updates, rejoicing with them through accomplishments and holding the final product in my hands — a dream made tangible.
So, this is how I came to believe in the power of crowd-funding; through experiencing first-hand, passion, determination and most importantly, community. A community has the power to well exceed a corporation. Crowd-funding calls people to join together and realize the sheer volume of their collective voice; it resonates in their hearts and minds, inspiring them towards greatness.
I hope you will join me in this campaign, to bring a book to life; one that encourages a positive connection within our world. Together, our small contributions can make a BIG impact.
