Hello SOTGC community,
I’m so excited to join the SOTGC family and hear from such amazing people! By profession, I am a PR executive and have worked with, and for, some of the world’s most recognized brands. I have a strong interest in personal branding and storytelling. My contributions to SOTCG will relate to those topics. Hope you find the posts useful and interesting! And if you have any ideas or questions, please send ‘em my way.
Now on with the show…
These are some of the most recognizable brands in the world. And whether you love them, hate them or are completely neutral about them, you have an image of what that brand stands for. In fact, these companies have spent years and multiple millions, if not billions, of dollars to hone and evolve their brands over time.
Successful brands are authentic. Successful brands are true to their core. Successful brands care about human connection.
Now say your own name out loud. Go on…it’s okay, no one’s listening!
When you said your name, what comes to mind? Is it the brand you are trying to convey? Thinking about yourself as your own brand and coming up with strategies to build your own brand will help you advance in your career. Be sure to write down how you think you are perceived now as well as goals for how you want to be perceived, both for now and the future.
Now let’s verify your results. To see if others perceive your personal brand the way you think they do, select a group of 4-6 friends…you know the ones who tell you if you have something in your teeth or tell you if an outfit is working for you…friends who will be honest, brutally so, if necessary. Ask each of them to tell you three words that describe you at work (professional qualities). Then ask them to tell you three words that describe you in a social setting (personal qualities).
Now it gets interesting. Put all of those descriptions side-by-side…the professional v. the social ones. What are the differences? What are the similarities? And is that what you are going for?
If it isn’t what you wanted, this is a perfect time to come up with a plan to change some of those perceptions.
The idea of personal branding is a very rich topic. We’ll have lots to cover in following posts. I hope this gives you something to think about as you launch or re-launch your personal brand!
