Hello SOTGC community,
I am often approached by friends and colleagues who need help either looking for a new job OR who have unfortunately lost their job.
I always ask, before discussing anything else, “Is your résumé up to date?” Now, can you guess how many times the answer to that question has been “Yes?”
If you guessed any more than zero, you’re wrong. For heaven’s sake y’all! Of course we don’t want to think about something devastating happening to our job, or about leaving a job we love. But what if tomorrow your company decides to downsize? Or if your dream job comes along? Even still, if your boss puts your name in for a promotion?
Follow the Girl Scout motto and “Always be Prepared.” Keep your resume overflowing with your latest work success stories.
1. Make sure your format is up to date. Take a look online for new and fresh ideas.
2. Is your content concise? Resumes aren’t for rambling. Bullet point your topics so you can expand on them during the interview.
3. Is your personal brand woven into your résumé? You are unique, let your authenticity drive your style.
4. Ask for help. Whether you hire a professional or ask a friend, always have a second pair of eyes review and edit your résumé.
