Hello SOTGC community,
Everyone has his or her hero. When you are a child they come in the form of some cartoon character with special powers. I found mine as an adult, and she is Mimi Guarneri, M.D. – Founder of San Diego Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine.
As the founder and medical director of AmoraMED Institute, I am deeply inspired by those around me. Each day, I draw on this inspiration to create my vision of a new global standard of care for rheumatology patients and those suffering from chronic inflammation. Inspiration provides the energy, perseverance and empowerment so crucial to making visions a reality.
Any entrepreneur can tell you about the days when walking away from the dream feels like the best thing to do. But, if you are fortunate and attentive, something or someone comes into your awareness and shines light upon you and your dream. It is the special ingredient needed to stay committed to your vision. Inspiration is a powerful form of support.
In establishing the modern model for rheumatology care in the United States, I draw upon such sources of inspiration as Mimi Guarneri, M.D., founder of San Diego’s Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Guarneri has had an impressive medical career as a physician leader. She has built a cutting-edge center, expanding the boundaries of traditional medical care and making a vast contribution to American medical practice. Her leadership at Scripps Integrative has profoundly touched many lives.
For her achievements, in 2011, she received the Bravewell Physician Leadership Award, established to recognize physician leaders who have made significant contributions to transforming the U.S. health-care system through the use of integrative medicine.
Dr. Guarneri, too, began with a vision. Trained as an interventional cardiologist, she applied out-of-the-box thinking to develop a more-integrative model that deals with the whole person, taking into consideration such aspects as the patient’s emotional and spiritual well-being. Persevering in her quest through consistent small steps, she achieved her vision.
While we both keep very busy schedules staying committed to our visions, whenever I run into Dr. Guarneri at medical conferences, it is always a pleasure to converse. She is attentive and listens from the heart. She looks you in the eye and makes you feel valued. A sense of caring from her core being comes through, and the energy, strength and hope she imparts in her dialogue is empowering. This is what I see her giving to her patients. And to receive it as a fellow female colleague is the light in my awareness to continue providing a new way of healing for arthritis patients.
Dr. Guarneri fearlessly shares her vision with the world. Through her dedication, she continually redefines the standard of cardiology patient care, giving patients a new way to heal that has been a gift to us all. And today, the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine is one of the nation’s leading integrative medicine centers.
Dr. Guarneri has courage and commitment, and her strength and integrity deeply inspire and influence me daily. I eagerly await her next amazing endeavor and know without a doubt, it will be delivered with excellence and compassion.
