Hello SOTGC community,
Here is a GREAT post from Jenn Harris on the best way to start your entrepreneur venture (if you’re so inclined to do it). The funny thing is…I was in D.C. last week on vacation and I met the man she is referencing in this post (fuzzyyellowballs). Talk about 2 degrees of separation!
A good friend and mentor of mine who started an online HD Tennis Coaching site fuzzyyellowballs.com suggested that I read a book called “Start With Why.” I picked it up probably 4 months ago, but never finished it. It wasn’t until I discovered audible.com that I got back into it. Anyways, this post will be about Why I decided to start Highheelgolfer.
Most people including myself always tell people WHAT we do instead of WHY we do it. If I meet someone new and they say why did you move to San Diego, I’ll tell them that I moved here to start a golf business, and then I go on to tell them that I teach women to play golf for business.
We never talk about the why. The best example of a company who started with WHY is Apple. Apple always does everything the best don’t they? Apple didn’t start their business to make computers instead they set out to create a way for the little man to take on the corporation. So their WHY was to inspire through innovation and give the little man the tools to level the playing field.
This book got me thinking, and thinking, and thinking even harder about WHY I decided to become an entrepreneur and how highheelgolfer will help me inspire those around me. Highheelgolfer may help women succeed in their careers through golf networking, but highheelgolfer’s WHY is to level the playing field for women. Highheelgolfer is here to help women take on the corporations and have a competitive advantage.
Because I am starting with WHY, I have the opportunity to branch out to other industries. Yes Golf is my vessel, but psychology and understanding behaviors are my expertise, therefore any vessel that helps in leveling the playing field for women is an option for me.
I don’t want you to think I just copy everything Apple does, but it would be kind of smart of me to do just that. I am in business to make a difference and live a passionate life and hopefully Highheelgolfer can do just that.
So I urge you to Start with WHY – get out there and rethink why you do what you do, and figure out a way to inspire others instead of just sell to them!
