Above: Some friends and I at a Birthday where we definitely rocked out like it was our part-time job
Hello SOTGC community,
I think it is normal to have times in our day (or nights) when we get a bit overwhelmed and hit a few walls when trying to solve a problem or get creative. If you work in an office you can usually spot when these are happening to your co-workers because you’ll walk by and see them staring in frustration at a blank screen, or sheet of paper, or at a white board with tons of bubbles, arrows, and squiggly lines drawn through them. If you’re in sales it’s usually the “hands fisted in your hair, staring either up at the sky or down at the floor, with eyebrows scrunched together” (not sure if we all learned this in sales training but somehow we think it’ll help…and so we revert to these poses in moments of creative problem solving.)
For me, lately, my walls have been hit when I’m sitting at home trying to come up with a way to get what’s inside my head, out into a post. Sometimes I have an idea for a post and it literally flies out of my fingers and onto the keyboard faster than I can keep up. Other times I start a sentence…then hit the delete key like it’s my part-time job (repeat process over and over and over again.)
This may seem silly, but what I’ve found works for me during these times of mega brain stalls, is to just dance it off. Whether that’s in your PJs and socks, rockin out to your favorite music (I’ve been on a Michael Jackson kick lately) or in your car between accounts as you perfect the art of “car dancing.” I’m not sure how this would go over in a cubicle at work but I guess we work with what we have huh? 🙂
Sometimes, the silly and energy releasing activity of being a complete goofball, of not caring what I look like and not thinking about anything other than bouncing around to a fun song, releases something inside me that has been stopping the creative flow, and I’m able to focus and move forward after a few minutes of this silliness. So how about you? Anything you’ve been working on lately that seems to be stalled? Have you tried finding a private area…blasting some of your favorite jams…and rockin out? Might help…and at least will provide entertainment for you…or your co-workers that get to observe this.
