Hello SOTGC community,
I was trying to figure out what kind of post to do for Fitness Friday when I also started to think about how bored I get doing my standard GYM work out during the winter. When the days get dark earlier, I’m less inclined to run outside. I also get a bit antsy on the treadmill since I’m cooped up inside all day, and it’s too cold or dark to do much outside when I’m done with the work day.
I ran a search in Google on the top calorie burning exercises and found an article on Yahoo Sports called “Top 10 Exercises and Sports That Burn 1,000 calories an hour.” (The disclaimer in this article is that to burn the entire 1,000 calories in the hour, you need to weight around 260 pounds.) The actual amount of calories you burn depends on how much you weigh and how hard you are pushing yourself. For instance, if you go and spend an hour in the gym, but you walk at 3 miles an hour for 15 minutes and then spend 45 minutes texting, Facebooking, Tweeting, and sitting on machines without really using them, you’re not going to burn many calories….yeah…shocker huh?
Do I realize a lot of us don’t have an hour and a half during the week to dedicate to gearing up and taking these sports or workouts on? Yes. However, some of them can be modified, and there are a couple that I haven’t tried or haven’t done before, but sound like they could be fun to get a group together on the weekend and try out. Below are the 10 top workouts, with my comments in blue.
#1 Spinning and elliptical trainer
Cool! I wrote a post called “So…you spin too?” because of the amount of people I’d recently encountered who are on this workout craze.
#2 Skiing (downhill and cross country)
Downhill and cross country skiing is an excellent winter sport that burns fat while one has fun. The average male will burn 752-980 calories skiing, and the average female will burn 645-841. I bet you could spice this up by having a simultaneous “cross country ski/snowball fight”…I wonder how many extra calories you’d burn by packing/launching/and dodging snowballs…?
#3 Basketball (full court)
Full court basketball is a fun sport that will help one to lose or maintain weight. When wanting to hang out with friends and workout together, basketball is a great, calorie blasting sport. The average man will shred 946 calories, while the average women will melt away 812.
#4 Rock climbing
Indoor and outdoor rock climbing offer a healthy adventure. Men, you will burn 946 calories, and women you will burn 812. There are a couple GYMs around here that have rock climbing walls…this has always looked like fun. Maybe I should see about getting a group together and trying this out something.
#5 Soccer (competitive)
Competitive soccer is another sport that involves team work and constant motion. Males can enjoy this sport while burning 866 calories each hour. Females will ignite their metabolism and annihilate 743 calories. I doubt I’m going to get into competitive soccer, however I bet getting some people together and kicking a ball around while we run around, laughing and goofing off would be pretty fun. Two of my friends tried out tennis (without taking lessons) once. They soon found they were horrendous at the sport, and one of them decided that the reason they were so bad was because they weren’t grunting loud enough when they hit the ball, so they decided to add “loud grunting” in to see if it improved their game. It did not…
Running at a speed of 6 mph will allow men to burn 866 calories, and women will burn 743. Keep in mind that the faster you run, the more you burn. Don’t forget to stretch after because it’s all fun and games until someone pulls a hammie…or a groin.
#7 Rope jumping
Rope jumping is hard work, but it offers high calorie burning benefits. Males who participate in this high intensity workout will burn 866 calories per hour, and females will burn 743. And if it’s your first time trying this out, it will provide for great entertainment for those of us around you 🙂
Swimming is a great sport that works the entire body in the water. The average weighing man will scorch 844 calories when swimming, while the average woman will melt away 724. I wrote a post called “be like water…or at least swim in it.” And since then I have not once swam for exercise…hmm…I should get on that.
Rather you choose to go rollerskating or rollerblading, you will be burning butter. (I don’t want to burn butter…I want to burn fat!) Men, put on your skates and prepare to annihilate 787 calories each hour. Women, prepare to have fun while burning away 675 calories. Oddly enough, women (or those who weigh less) will burn more calories skating than swimming, whereas, men (or those who weigh more) appear to burn more swimming. Hmm…that IS odd…however, I’m willing to go swimming with people, I’m NOT willing to go head out and do a sport where if I hit ONE crack or ONE rock the wrong way, I’m going to go flying forward and skid for several feet on the surface of some cement…PASS!
#10 Vinyasa yoga
Vinyasa yoga is a type that involves breathing in synchronization to each movement. Men, pick up your yoga mat and burn 752 calories in just an hour. Women can burn 645 calories for every 60 minutes.
Once again…at the end of the day…weight loss and maintenance comes down to a very simple math equation. Calories in – calories out = whether or not you gain or lose weight.
