Hello SOTGC community,
Every year around this time we begin thinking about the holidays and planning what gifts to purchase for our family and friends. And every year it becomes more and more clear to me that it is truly about the shared experiences and the magic of moments. Just the same, when you find that perfect token for someone, something you know will absolutely make their cheeks hurt from smiling, it’s a great feeling. Here are some inspirations for gifts.
S’well Bottle –
What do fitness buffs always do besides workout? Drink lots and lots of water. I first saw this bottle and honestly just liked the way it looked. Once I read a bit more about it, I realized it has many benefits – no more plastic bottles, supports a good cause, keeps drinks cold or hot, it’s stylish, and available in multiple sizes. A swell gift indeed! http://www.swellbottle.com/
As someone who pretty much lives in workout apparel and really appreciates the ‘athleisure’ trend, I’m constantly on the lookout for new brands. I used to wear all black (who am I kidding, I still do a majority of the time), but I’ve decided that this year it’s all about the printed leggings. So bring on the fabulousness. The ones that really resonated with me are Crane & Lion (http://www.craneandlion.com/) – a new brand from Boston, they are more polished and I consider them my “dress up” workout clothes, and Onzie (http://www.onzie.com/bottoms/) – a brand from Los Angeles, known for amazingly soft fabric and fantastic prints. P.S. I prefer shades of blue.
Get to Class –
Now, I know the trend is all about variety and trying a bunch of different classes and feeling sore, but having a specific goal for your workouts will be beneficial for better results (see my post from about this time last year). For instance, your core is the foundation of all your movement. If you are looking for a stronger core, that means strength and endurance in the muscles of your abdominals, your back, as well as stability in your hips and shoulders. My recommendation? Get back to basics – start with simple cardio and a core-building workout like Pilates. Commit to the program for four to six weeks before you try something else. Start now, before the holidays to establish a routine, and, better yet, get a friend to join. For more about Pilates, take a peek at the studio where I take classes http://halepilatesmethod.com/about/pilates-method/.
Sometimes nothing thrills your little girl more than being just like you. When I saw these Liquido MinnieMe leggings (http://www.liquidoactive.com/liquido-minimi/minime-leggings.html). I thought they were perfect for my little girls. The Fiji and Sassy Bette are fun and perfect for yoga in the park, jumping rope, a bike ride, or an afternoon stroll.
Qalo is a company that created a wedding band to withstand an active lifestyle. No need to misplace your wedding band (it’s not only a guy thing!) or get it all dinged up during weight training. Such a great couple gift (http://qalo.com/).
Another one I like is the Pura Vida Bracelets (https://www.puravidabracelets.com/). They represent a pure life, have a yoga/beach vibe, and support a variety of causes. The colors are vibrant, designs simple, and the message is meaningful.
Foam Roller –
Post workout recovery is a huge topic as it impacts the results of workouts. From nutrition to sleep and stretching to foam rolling, there are many ways to optimize your recovery and ease aching muscles. Based on my own experience, foam rolling has changed the way I feel and has given new meaning to TV time in the evenings! In addition to stretching, rolling is a must in our household and once you’ve been doing it for a while a simple black foam roller is just not enough. Enter Trigger Point, whose products are designed to replicate the pressure of a massage therapist’s hands. I like their grid foam roller, and the massage balls look like perfect travel companions. https://www.tptherapy.com/
Stocking Stuffers –
Rise bars (https://risebar.com/) – I discovered these at the IDEA Fitness Expo this summer and really enjoyed the flavors. My favorite part about the bars is the ingredients – simple, simple, simple.
I sampled Mediterra bars (http://mediterranutrition.com/about/brand-history/) at Whole Foods earlier this year. How can you not try a savory snack bar?? It shouldn’t be so shocking and in fact it is how it should be – a snack that is savory and satisfying.
The Gym Bag –
Functional, fun, yet polished, MZ Wallace (http://www.mzwallace.com/shop) has several totes and backpacks perfect for the gym or the office. Their quilted nylon is durable and lightweight, water and stain resistant – all key features for a hard working bag. I love their classic colors and bold prints.
I Hope you enjoyed some of my gift recommendations this year. In the weeks leading up to the New Year, I also always make batches of healthier cookies or banana/zucchini bread or even pumpkin bars to share with neighbors, teachers, colleagues, and friends. Easy to make a couple batches, package in a clear or brown baggie with a seasonal ribbon, and voila! Don’t forget to plan some quality time with friends: sign up for a race together then enjoy a brunch, or go ice skating before or after dinner. Just remember to stay active and have fun!
Soak in the joys of the holiday season and stay active!
