Hello SOTGC community,
The long anticipated vacation is just around the corner, and our expectations for the perfect holiday are high. We are looking forward to sleeping in and planning to do nothing more than read, relax, and eat delicious food. Weirdly enough though, instead of coming back completely rejuvenated, we often feel like we didn’t make the most out of our vacation.
Here are some ideas to get the most you can out of your vacation:
Over the years we develop a habit of reading certain magazines and technical literature closely related to our job, certain genres of novels, and maybe even certain daily newspapers. Logically, that is what we pack when get ready for a vacation. However, this is the time to break your routine! When choosing your holiday literature, go for something that you have never heard about before. Choose something that you have no knowledge about, something that you might even find boring at first glance. I was in the habit of packing marketing literature whenever I was getting ready for vacation, but two years ago I started to break that routine and pack something completely unknown to me. This year I went for a magazine called Geo Compact with articles about how chemistry influences our daily life. I am not a chemist and I never really had a big passion for chemistry back at school. Picking up that issue, however, was the best thing I did. The issue had many interesting and fascinating articles all about chemistry and really gave me a new perspective on what I always found to be a closed subject to me. And, even if I might not be able to use my newfound knowledge for a marketing project, it felt good to stimulate different parts of my brain.

Do something for your body
Instead of slowing all activity down in order to relax, take the time to do something good for your body. Try different recipes and go for food that is healthy for you. Additionally, start your day with a sport routine, such as yoga, a long walk, or a swim.
Stimulate your body, and you will feel how your endorphins flood your brain.

It is refreshing to spend a day doing the complete opposite of what you are used to. Start your day off with a cold shower if you’re used to warm showers. Brush your teeth with your left hand. Watch the sun rise instead of sleeping in late. Let your friends order your food or try a new recipe. You will find it refreshing to deliberately do everything different for one day, and doing so will make you aware of the little things in life that make you happy.
Try something new
Stuck in our daily routine, we rarely have time to try something new. Vacation is just the right time to give a new activity a chance, whether it be a new sport like hiking or snorkeling, or a creative activity like painting, crafting, or decorating. Take your time and indulge—there is nothing more fulfilling than getting new input.

Now is the time to sit back, relax, and let your mind wander. While we’re on vacation and completely relaxed we have a tendency to dream big—and that is exactly what we should do more often. Be brave enough to question the things you are currently busy with and ask yourself if that is what your heart is into. If not, go that extra mile and ask yourself what you need to make a change. And don’t you worry, Rome wasn’t built in a day and that may apply to your dreams. Be patient with them but try to refocus on them.
