Hello SOTGC community,
Arianna Huffington, author and syndicated columnist of the Huffington Post, coined the phrase YOU are your most important human capital. The moment I read it, I knew this would be the basis of my next blog.
The urge to do more, be everything to everybody—often to the point of punishing long schedules, too many activities and not enough time to rest—resonated with me and possibly with you too. How do you and I say, “Stop; how do I change my life for the better? “
Maybe, like you, I have to be reminded of what’s important in life. Like Arianna, I’ve been driven by self-development and self-improvement. She is definitely on a much higher scale than I am, but I bet you and I can identify with being high achievers, excelling in every area of our life and putting a high bar on everything we do.
I don’t want to give you all the obvious clichés about how to take care of yourself, which, yes! is the best investment you can give yourself. I want to give you a new perspective, something unique that will challenge the way you think about yourself as the most important human capital; having you look at your life in a different way.
What is the #1 way to change your life for the better? Happiness! Loving yourself and choosing to be happy is an investment in you. It’s also about taking incremental steps toward happiness.
I recently gave myself a happiness mood makeover! Maybe some of these steps will work for you:
- Increase the number of hours you sleep. I was getting five hours of sleep each night; now I’m getting an average of six hours. What a big difference that has made. It is a small but significant step for my overall health.
- Keep a journal. Journal 10 minutes every day. Just write; do not place rules on what you journalize. Unleash everything from your mind, for a clear mind helps you capture those joyous moments in life.
- Ask for what you want. I found that I had not been asking for what I wanted, which always left me frustrated. Start to ask for what you need and want from others and yourself! Prayer and meditation are also forms of asking for what you want, and they will put frustration as well as fears to rest!
- Have fun! Have you ever been so busy you forget to have fun? Start simple—coffee with friends, plans for the weekend, date nights, or a road trip—get them on your calendar and make them a priority! They will lift your spirits, which will lift your energy!
Remember, choosing to be happy is a choice but, more importantly, it is an investment in you, and it will change your life for the better!
