Hello SOTGC community,
What does it take to be an exceptional leader, have others follow you, and produce results? It is when one finds the ideal balance and blending of focus. We have all experienced different styles of leadership, but when a leader is single focused on just performance, the system eventually breaks down.
Leaders that focus only on the bottom line at first appear to be doing a great job, but it doesn’t last. They are referred to as “pacesetters.” They lead by “command and coercion.” They do not take the human factor into play, whether it is having self-awareness or being aware of the team. This style of leadership eventually leads to employee disengagement, short-term results, and a toxic environment.
But when a leader recognizes the need to draw from other sources, success in leadership takes hold. A leader must draw from within, connect to the team, and also have a focus on performance. The blending of the three creates an exceptional leader, employees that are motivated and inspired, and an organization that runs smoothly and optimally.
This is not to say that an organization doesn’t need to focus on goals and the ability to perform and improve. Nor is it true that developing “soft skills” or interpersonal skills leads to weak performance and business ineffectiveness. But a blending of professional skills and personal awareness brings about results.
So how do you get the right balance of paying attention to the bottom line, having inner awareness, and connecting to others?
Step One: A leader needs to have self-awareness. This is the ability to find and connect to one’s own strengths and weaknesses. A leader needs to be authentic and listen within. This inner vision becomes the guiding light, and others notice it. People want to follow you. Thus, the first step in being a leader.
Step Two: When a leader connects with others, trust and cooperation is built. His team recognizes his expertise and advice. This leadership style forms a collaborative effort. The employees feel that they have value and are important to the organization, and they have a desire to increase performance and productivity.
Step Three: We need not forget about performance and the bottom line. By being focused, a leader becomes better at keeping abreast of market trends and the competition.
Maintaining the balance of all three steps leads to success. The leader’s inner vision, collaboration with the team, and focus on the business systems allows a leader to clearly see and be flexible to new challenges and trends ahead.
How does one go about having a combined focus? By practicing mindfulness. With mindfulness you build concentration and focus on the moment. You are able to see what is in front of you. You learn to listen more deeply, ask questions, reflect, and gain insight and new perspectives on situations.
