Hello SOTGC community,
I’ve been thinking about this for a while now… The first time in my adult life that I believe I became conscious of breathing was when I started taking yoga. I couldn’t for the life of me get into the poses AND inhale and exhale simultaneously – I was always holding my breath from the effort and then trying to catch up during downward dog.
The second time I really noticed was after my second baby. My abdominals didn’t look like they used to, and with my focus on fitness I realized there was something more to this breathing thing.
And just recently I stumbled upon this TED talk about the pace of modern life and how it affects women and our biochemistry, and combined with my nutrition studies, everything started clicking in.
So, close your eyes, take a deep breath and a long exhale…
Breathing is crucial to our existence. It works our innermost muscles (diaphragm), it calms our body, and it allows the body to do what it needs to do to keep us alive and healthy. It also allows us to run, move with intention, laugh, and to be in the moment.
When stressed, challenged, or rushing from one moment to the next, our breathing can become dysfunctional. Our posture, impacted by modern living, can contribute to this dysfunctional breathing, which then impacts our entire kinetic chain – the movement of our body.
My challenge to you today is to take a few moments to breathe again.
Do whatever makes you comfortable – a couple of minutes of meditation, a few deep breaths, or explore some different breathing techniques. Get in touch with your breath again and use it to move you.
