Hello SOTGC community!
We often delve into the new year with promises to ourselves that we will try new things and explore the unknown. As we find ourselves in February … how are you doing in combating monotony this year? Whether it be trying a new type of cuisine, learning to rock climb, or perfecting a new language, sometimes the act of trying something new is easier said than done. At times, the gravitational pull of monotony on our lives can be significant beyond our wildest dreams, especially during the most hectic times of our lives.
Over the years I have found that one of the best ways to fight monotony and explore new things is to get friends actively involved in the feat. Here are five ways that friendships can truly help us explore new things … not only will you find yourself immersed in novelty, but you will also find yourself growing closer to your friends, a beautiful “side effect” of this approach!
- Ask your friends to teach you something they enjoy doing!
We all have amazing friends that are unique in their personalities, professions, hobbies and talents. Why not draw on this dynamic individuality to try something new yourself! Ask your friends to teach you something. It may be as simple as making cupcakes with your friend who is an expert baker, or as intricate as learning French from your friend who did an internship in Paris during University. Share something you are passionate about in return as well!
- Swap playlists, movie recommendations, and must-read book lists!
Trying something new does not need to be an enormous feat! Sometimes a small change, like listening to a new genre of music, or picking out a book that we would not usually gravitate towards, can suffice in mitigating monotony, especially during the busiest of times. Ask around to see what your friends have been enjoying as of late. Make lists and work your way through!
- Try something completely novel: It’s more fun when done with a friend!
Trying something completely novel, out of our comfort zone, or challenging, can be quite overwhelming and daunting at times. The task can become much more enjoyable by sharing it with a friend; the support of a friend is priceless! Whether it be trying out that new yoga class or taking a language class, elicit the company of a good friend, and enjoy the journey together!
- Expand your circle of friends by meeting “friends of friends”!
Part of decreasing the monotony in life is meeting new people; human interactions are beautiful in that each and every person we meet has a unique life story. One great way to meet new people and form new friendships is by becoming acquainted with others through your friends.
- Find yourself some great “travel buddies”!
Travel is an absolutely beautiful way by which we may discover an entirely new culture, country and world. Traveling with friends can be an amazing bonding experience; one that will allow for memories to last a lifetime! Define your own adventure together … part of the fun is planning the trip together and laughing about the memories afterwards! Discover a new world this year … and do so arm-in-arm with some wonderful friends!
