I recently asked myself what consciousness is and how do we really gain consciousness? What really inspired me to write this article was the daily quote I received:
“ I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.”- Stephen Covey
I thought that was quite the powerful statement, but what happens when “things” happen to us? That negative thought that suddenly comes across our mind while driving or maybe our partner derails us with their agenda .…
Well, the first step is to think about what it means to be conscious and, to me, it means being in control of our reaction. We know that we cannot always control what happens to us but we do have a choice in how we react to something. So let’s say a negative thought lurks around and you start feeding it. You start making up scenarios and, even worse, go to the “if- scenarios.” There is nothing worse than speculating and continuing to dwell in that negativity. I don’t know if that usually happens to you, but the saying, “when it rains it pours” is not a coincidence .… Misery and Negativity like company so it is up to YOU to break that chain and change the direction that you are heading towards.
The secret to the above mentioned solution is your attitude and knowing that you are in charge. Yes, things will continue to “happen to you” but you do not have to accept it. You can choose to smile at a bad game; you can choose to show kindness when people give you an attitude; and you can persevere when it seems the stars are aligning against you. Knowing that you are in control of your destiny can make the difference you need to feel empowered.
Consciousness is one of the most confusing elements a human being can work on. Try focusing on one task at a time. Next time you do yoga, or are listening to music, or even just driving your car… how “in the moment” are you really? Meaning, do you notice how hard it is to focus on one thing and not let your thoughts drift away to other things you still need to do? I urge you to try it next time you are having a moment of quietness .… It is harder than you think but remember that you control your thoughts, so you CAN change the direction.
