Hello SOTGC community,
My world changed the day I found out I was pregnant. At that moment, I realized my body was now a protective shell, in every way possible, during the growth and development of my child. When I later found out that my rapidly growing “protective shell” was busy with the growth and development of two babies, I immediately started reading all the books I could find that taught parenting, discipline, nutrition, and routines. You name it, I was reading it.
Now, 12 years later, I realize all the books in the world do not teach you what you truly need to know to raise and influence a child. All you really need is experience. Yes, in my opinion, you need to leverage your previous experience as a child. We all have been there and guess what!? We survived! This was not by luck, so there must be something worth leveraging to help a child grow into adulthood.
Okay, I am not stating that parenting is for everyone. What I am saying is that everyone has the experience of being a child. We have all made mistakes that we have looked back on and wished we had never done. There are times I have flashbacks of my childhood, and I feel ashamed of how I acted towards a classmate, a teacher, or even a family member. I have even caught myself thinking, “I wish someone would have given me some advice about ….”
The reality is that childhood today is far more complicated than we could have imagined from our own youth. The younger generations are communicating with people from all over the world, at a moment’s notice, through the use of social media. Their world does not start at their driveway and end at the end of their street. Instead, they are on social media talking with a stranger that appears to be their age and with similar interests. They are face- timing friends during a family night out, in school, or at work.
As my children continue to grow, I hunger for additional support to help raise them to be productive members of society. I am not asking to be replaced, but I am asking help in sharing experiences so they can make better choices as they continue to grow. If we could all come together and spend time positively influencing all children, great things can happen. We should be proactive in reaching out and being a positive role model to help them find their way. Why not tell a story or two about mistakes you had made and the unfortunate lesson you had to learn?
There are so many ways this can be approached, and organizations are currently doing this. I want to focus on one organization that is doing just this and making some amazing differences in children of all ages. This organization is called Bright Futures USA. I have mentioned it in the past and am currently preparing to attend their 2nd Annual Community Engagement Conference as their opening keynote speaker. The next few posts will be sharing more information about this organization and the incredible impact it is making in the lives of so many children. I hope you join me in this journey and take a step to learning how your community can become a Bright Futures affiliate.
