Hello SOTGC community,
You’ve had a busy year, the holiday season is almost over, and now it’s time to gear up for next year! The nonstop accumulation of data, changing events, people, and fluctuating conditions are enough to overwhelm even the highest of achievers.
Peak performance truly depends on your ability to take care of yourself, and it starts with your greatest asset–your brain! Brains get tired. Yes it’s true! A tired brain leads to less than optimal behaviors in the areas of planning, visualization, judgment, and decision-making, in addition to emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and control.
Sometimes there is no obvious indication that your brain is fried until it’s too late, i.e. heightened emotional states or sensitivity to light and sound. Great performers know that it’s important to give their brain a rest and make vital choices that will keep their mind sharp all day long. Here are three choices you can make each and every day to optimize high performance:
Sleep. People who get the right amount of sleep make better decisions and are better able to control themselves under stress. The amount of sleep required varies for each individual, i.e. six to nine hours, but each person has an ideal amount for his or her best performance.
Food. Glucose is a key. Without glucose it becomes impossible for the brain to say no to the wrong foods and manage other challenges. Proteins and whole foods, which slowly convert to glucose on a regular basis, maintain a steady flow for the brain to function from.
Move. Sitting and working all day can quickly deplete your brain power. Walking, lifting weights, going to the gym, or simply adding more movement to your day will strengthen your brain’s capability.
What will you do differently in 2015 to take care of yourself and take care of your brain so you can be the best you can be? For me, I’m going to work on getting more sleep! https://twitter.com/findyouraim.
Here’s to your success!
