Hello SOTGC community,
How is your holiday season going? Is everyone done Christmas shopping? This last weekend my parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and I joined them for a celebration dinner at Flemings.
As we were driving to the restaurant I made an offhanded remark about how slow the person in front of me was driving and my Dad said: “honey, isn’t it nice that it’s the holidays and that everyone is in a cheerful mood?”
OK Daddy, I get it, “relax, be grateful, and let it go.”
I used to think that during December people were in a better mood because of the holidays. Because the end of the year was nearing and they were taking stock of all their blessings, looking forward to taking some time off and spending it with their families to reconnect, and to reflect on the accomplishments and lessons of the previous year.
Now I’m starting to think it’s mainly my attitude and outlook that changes during this month that allows me to look at everything in a brighter and more festive mood. It also makes me wonder if the “holiday spirit” really exists year round, and I’m simply too wrapped up in my own life to appreciate all the good that surrounds me daily.
2014 has been a great year for me professionally and I started working on myself personally as well. I had spent the last 9 years building my career and defining success through accolades and achievements and this year I worked on defining success as being a well rounded and balanced person. It’s still a work in progress and because of my genetic makeup the “work/life balance” concept is always going to be difficult for me. However I’ve made a conscious effort to be work harder on my relationships and it’s amazing how much peace of mind that mentality has given me.
As we near the close of the year, as we celebrate the various holidays with loved ones, I hope we all take time to remember what this “season” is about. It’s about expanding our horizons and reaching out past our individual lives to lend a helping hand to others. It’s about being grateful for what blessings we have been given and knowing that if we continue to work hard, that we will achieve what we’re supposed to in life.
So with these wishes I hope you have a great week and I look forward to the progress and potential of 2015.
