Hello SOTGC Community,
How do you dress when you travel?
Do you wear workout/yoga gear that might not all coordinate with slouchy, slide on sneakers or Ugg Boots because it’s just easier getting through security and warmer on the plane? Maybe holey jeans and an oversized tee with your favorite hoodie and funky pair of Toms because you just want to get to you destination unnoticed and spruceup when you get to your hotel? Do you dress to the nines because you rock it in the airport and are a woman on a mission?
You never know when you may be awarded a surprise seating upgrade or who you’ll meet in an airport. I met my strong and handsome husband in the Houston, TX airport while changing planes on a business trip. I took the middle seat next to our energetic and well-connected SOTGC founder Marney Reid, which led to me having a new platform to reach out to a greater community and to you reading this article! You just don’t know when you’ll meet your next best client, boss, personal ambassador or the love of your life, so I encourage you to always maintain a sense of pride in how you present yourself to the world. It’s your physical signature!
Represent your brand well at all times – your name, the company for which you work and the company you keep. If a potential new friend asks what you do for a living, be in a position to leave a great first impression rather than having to apologize for your appearance. Remember, we also represent others in our profession.
For example, while flying to the east coast of the US last week, I saw a woman in the airport carrying a logo’d bag with the brand I represent. Her bag would be noticeable to anyone working directly with this company and she was wearing an ill-fitted outfit complete with bra straps showing and house shoes… SIGH…We work in the fashion and beauty industry. As a result of cases like this, I’ve had to occasionally defend the professionalism of our organization. Not everyone considers herself a professional when she should. Don’t be that girl.
Want some suggestions on how to pull off a truly fabulous yet comfortable and practical jet-set style? Here are my top five. And when in doubt, choose a style icon to emulate like Princess Kate, Queen Letizia of Spain, Naomi Sims, Cameron Diaz or Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Create a signature go-to look and run with it!
Dress in layers with lightweight blouses and tops, a fitted jacket and a great scarf that can double as an evening wrap.
Wear stylish but comfortable shoes: ballet flats, loafers, flat or low-wedge boots, a great pair of nude wedges or thicker-heeled pumps should get you stylishly through the terminal without limping, sore feet or blisters and serve you well on the rest of your trip.
Put on a pop of color in your handbag, jewelry, shoes or lip color. Because monochromatic schemes make travel packing so much easier, a pop of color in your accessories and lip color help brighten up your look.
Maxi skirts are great because they are stylish, comfortable and keep your legs warm in the cool airport or when the plane gets chilly.
A snazzy travel tote to keep you organized like the Michael Kors Jet Set collection in medium and large sizes as well as way fun colors. Natural neutrals and classy metallics will also have you looking quite dapper. If you want the same great look, design and quality at half the price of a MK bag, hook up with a Stella & Dot Stylist, you will LOVE her and your new pieces. Most of us need and deserve a great personal stylist.
You don’t have to overpack to look great and with a travel style theme based on your destination and purpose of travel, you can make every piece count.
It’s a matter of pride; pride in who we are, pride in what we do, pride in what we represent. In this internationally competitive business market, every leg up we can get counts and I believe a confident, attractive, approachable appearance is a small sum to exact. When you smile and look polished, others are proud to be in your space, proud to connect with you, proud to do business with you and proud to represent you. Be proud to represent yourself in your daily life and especially while traveling.
