Hello SOTGC community,
As a society, we are always looking for someone as a hero to guide us and lead us. As social beings, we need and seek leadership. We cannot live without leaders. We are a hierarchical society, and, like a child, we look to others like a parent for protection. We look to them to point the way, to give us direction, and to give us something to belong to. We admire our heroes’ great confidence, fortitude, and their character to do the right things when obstacles arise.
What if your hero isn’t out there but inside of you? What if the hero you are looking for is inside you with the characteristics and potential you’ve been looking for?
During his best actor academy award speech for Dallas Buyers Club, Matthew McConaughey described his hero this way: “When I was 15 years old I had a very important person in my life ask me ‘who is your hero?’ I said, I don’t know. I have to think about this; give me a couple of weeks. Two weeks later this person comes up to me again and asks ‘who is your hero?’ I said, I thought about it and you know who it is? It’s me in 10 years. I turned 25, ten years later, that same person comes up to me and said ‘so are you a hero? I said, not even close – my hero is me at 35.“ McConaughey now described how his hero at 35 is his future self. “Every day, every week, every month, every year of my life, my hero is always ten years away. I’m never going to beat my hero. I’m not going to attain that—I know I’m not. That’s fine with me because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing. Whatever those things are, whatever it is we look up to, to whatever we look forward to, to whomever we look up to—I say alright. Just keep living!”
You are capable of great heroism. Those qualities you’ve recognized and admired in others froma distance are within you. The greatest leader and hero you could come to know is the one you are capable of becoming. It’s in you – right now – you just need to wake it up. Awaken, strengthen, and release the hero in you.
