Hello SOTGC community,
As a career-focused woman, I find myself constantly looking for ways to save time! I often don’t have time to leisurely stroll through a department store when looking for a dress, run by Target to pick up a new table for the house, or, much less, clean my house! After a long week at work, weeding my garden and tending to a messy yard does not sound like a fun relaxing activity. I am usually living on the edge of having just enough time for the ones I love and my career. So, today, I am going to let you in a on a few secrets I have learned that make life a little easier.
- Online shopping. It has changed my life. Early in my career, one of the female leaders in the medical device industry spoke to our women’s group about how she balances work and home. One time-saving tip she gave was online shopping. She explained to us that she orders her clothes from designers whose sizes often fit her, and then sends back what she doesn’t want. She always looked stylish, but never spent time in a store! There are even online concierge clothing services like Stitch Fix (www.stitchfix.com) and Rent the Runway (www.renttherunway.com) that can help you pick out clothes that look great on your body. Remember that you can buy almost anything online now, so cut that trip to Target and simply order off the website!
- Realize that you cannot do it all! Ladies, if you are working a 40, 50, or 60 hour work week, why on earth would you come home on your weekend and spend the whole time cleaning your house? You work hard, so enjoying a clean home when you are off should be a luxury you can give yourself. Even if you only have someone in to clean once a month, it’s worth every penny. The same goes for your yard (unless this is something that you enjoy)!
- Employ excellent help. If you do not have time to train your pet, why not hire a pet trainer? Have kids? Hire someone you trust to take care of them while you are working. Don’t have time to cook? Realize that the people you trust to help you may not do it exactly the way you would, but know that they are helping you to focus on your career and have time to focus on family while you are at home.
