Hello SOTGC community,
“I just want to be happy!” was what I told my coach during one of our first sessions when she asked what I wanted out of my career and life. “How do you know when you’ll be happy?” she wisely responded. It didn’t take long for her to realize that I didn’t know the root cause to my happiness and just recently my light bulb has finally flickered on!
If you were to ask me a year ago to describe my ideal career and my ideal life, I could have given you every detail down to the candle scent in the room (no seriously, I could! It’s called Pink Sands). However, if you were to ask me why it was my ideal career and ideal life, my only answer would have been, “Because it makes me happy!” Not a very gratifying answer when you think about all the pieces that make up one’s happiness is it?
My coach, who occasionally takes off her “Coach Hat,” as she calls it, and put on her “Big Sister Hat” (because we have an awesome relationship like that), put it into perspective for me. I needed to figure out my most important values. And these most important values needed to be present in both my career and my life in order for me to be happy. “Okay, it makes sense,” I thought, so I went along. After some thinking activities and asking myself “why is this value important,” I started to discover things I didn’t realize I valued.
The things I love most about my job and life relate to these top values, and the things I hate most about my job and life go against them. I’ve also found that it’s helpful to consider my top values when I need to make a big decision. Finding my values has truly changed my life. Every day I can’t help but think about this newfound self-discovery and how it contributes to my happiness.
Have you discovered the value of your happiness? Identify times when you were most happy, most proud, and most satisfied with your life. Then jot down any common themes you see, and you may be well on your way to uncovering your most powerful link to happiness.
