Hello SOTGC community,
According to the Oxford dictionary, “Eureka!” is defined as a cry of joy or satisfaction when one finds or discovers something. This exclamation can thus be used to describe those moments that are justifiably and timelessly represented by an animated “light bulb over the head” in childhood Saturday morning cartoons! Unfortunately these “Eureka!” moments can sometimes be hard to come by. In light of this, here is a call to action, so to speak, to put those moments in safekeeping when they do come to life!
When it comes to preparing for an interview, writing an essay for a scholarship application, tweaking one’s resume, or simply requiring an extra dose of daily inspiration and guidance, we can all sometimes find ourselves at a loss for words or ideas. Some days, words and ideas may be flowing, and we find ourselves being able to perfectly express and capture what it is we are feeling, aspiring towards, or looking to achieve from a given experience … and, well, other times, the creativity and proficiency is just not there.
Here is a quick strategy that can help in these situations … a way to, in a sense, put smart thoughts and “Eureka!” moments in safekeeping for when we need them the most!
Find a colorful piece of paper or stationary (I tend to use a giant bright pink Post-it note myself), and place it somewhere easily accessible, such as on a bulletin board in your office, on the corner of your desk, or even on the kitchen fridge! Next, every time a key word or catchphrase comes to mind that captures anything related to your professional or educational goals and experiences, write it down! Whether it be an idea you are inspired by in a magazine article, a point shared with you by a mentor, or simply something that comes to mind as you work on a project or application, write it down!
By writing all these words and phrases down on paper, you are building a repertoire of “good ideas,” so to speak, that can save you on a day when you are feeling tongue-tied or uninspired!
We all go through life extracting inspiration, motivation, and ideas from different people, places, and experiences around us. Embrace all these sources of insight, advice, and encouragement, both expected and unexpected, by committing them to paper and putting them to good use whenever you need them!
Wishing you all many “Eureka!” moments!!! Take some time over the next week to write down those moments and store them someplace safe.
