Hello SOTGC community,
Much like a joke, a successful compliment lives or dies with its delivery. Compliments are intended to praise an accomplishment or make the person feel good about an aspect of their personality or appearance.
Compliments must be simple and sincere. “Your bracelet is stunning” or “Brilliant idea, Carlos. We were completely stuck until you suggested we use a different approach.”
Compliments can often backfire when it is followed by explanations that unintentionally come across as veiled insults. For instance, “Those shoes are fabulous, much better than the clunky ones you were wearing last time,” sounds like a back-handed remark. If you wish to admire your friend’s fabulous footwear, then say just that.
Avoid being overly effusive as it may seem insincere. A good rule to remember is if the compliment does not come naturally, if you have to think about it, it won’t sound natural either.
When someone gives you a compliment, accept it with a gracious smile and do say, “thank you.”
