Hello SOTGC community,
As the spring weather settles in and our bodies naturally yearn for sunshine-filled days and fresh starts, we are being presented with the perfect opportunity to make resolutions for leading healthier, more mindful and more enjoyable lives!
We find ourselves in an era where we each have multiple email addresses to check on a daily basis, a diverse array of ringtones emerging from our phones to signal incoming messages every minute, social media notifications constantly popping up on our screens in our peripheral vision, not to mention countless hours working away on a computer or laptop, on a regular basis.
All in all, this immense amount of “screen time” can sometimes be overwhelming, to say the least. In light of this, here are some pointers on how to make one of your resolutions this spring about creating a more positive atmosphere around screen time….
Feel that paper between your fingers and throw some sand in there for the mix! There is something to be said about picking up a good book and enjoying it alongside a warm cup of tea nestled up on the couch or by the sea while lazily lounging in a beach chair. Electronic books are extremely useful and have been a great addition to my own library … however, once in a while, it is a gift to the soul and mind to enjoy a good ol’ paperback novel. Whether it be the smell of sunscreen on the pages or grains of sand in the creases, reading a “page-turner” and actually turning the pages can be a truly relaxing experience!
Clear out that inbox! Part of the frustration and anxiety that surrounds electronic communications lies in the daunting and bottomless pit we call an inbox. It may take a couple of hours, it may even take a good part of the day … but managing an inbox properly can save you many headaches in the future. Create folders, delete old messages and, most importantly, create a system that works well for you! In essence, along with the process of de-cluttering your closet for spring, make some time this year to de-clutter your inbox.
Limit screen time before bed for better zzzzz’s! Watching a screen before bed, such as a television or a laptop screen, can be quite stimulating for your brain, thus taking away from your body’s ability to unwind and reach a calmer state before bed. Give your mind a chance to relax before bed by reading a good book, doing some yoga poses, or even having a nice old-fashioned telephone chat with a friend!
Check your phone in at the door! Next time you’re out for dinner or coffee with friends make a pact to stay away from your phones as much as possible. No matter how much fun we can have texting or facebooking each other, when you have the real person right in front of you, take advantage! There is nothing that can replace the true interactions that we are able to have with other human beings …. Relish in your time spent in good company!
Replace some TV time for timeless entertainment! Switch things up this spring and enjoy a play or theatre piece in lieu of your usual evening in front of the TV. In the fresh onset of spring, it is the perfect opportunity to try something new and enjoy a new cultural experience!
This past March I traveled down south for a week and had no choice but to have my phone on “airplane” mode the entire time … it was such a freeing and calming experience! Along with daily commitments, work and responsibilities, such detachment is often not quite possible in our daily lives, and in the end technology has proven to be quite advantageous … but just like a good piece of double-fudge cheesecake with cookie-dough filling, remember to enjoy everything good in moderation!
Dearest SOTGC readers, I hope these pointers serve you well in creating a more positive approach to screen time this spring and beyond!
