Hello SOTGC community,
How many of you LOVE to people watch? How many of you are currently people watching AS you skim this post? I’m a HUGE fan of this pastime. Even with “reality TV” I still think there is very little that can beat a good people watching session. I must caution you, there is a thin line between being a professional people watcher and looking super creepy. So here are my tips on how to effectively people watch but avoid being caught and having that awkward moment where you pure joy in what’s going on in front of you is halted when you get caught by the subject of observation.
Sunglasses: They are excellent at simultaneously shading your eyes from the sun AND being able to follow people with your eyes without them knowing it. Remember that if you turn your head AS your eyes follow your subjects…the gig is up
Staring too long: If you don’t have sunglasses with you, you need to up the “cover stare” ability and this is something that must be practiced before trying in the real environment. I suggest practicing with your friends…when they’re not aware that you’re practicing. The perfect amount of time to stare at an event going on in front of you depends on many variables: how far they are from you, if there is more than one subject being watched, if they’re interacting, if they being loud, etc. So time the length of the stare with how attentive they are being to their surroundings
Following people as you watch them: This MAY seem like a great idea until that ONE time when you get caught…if this happens…continue walking, eyes forward, and just hope your friends don’t start laughing at you. I once started following someone as they walked, imitating them, got caught, and to keep up appearances had to continue walking EXACTLY as I had been imitating for almost half a mile…lesson learned
What happens when YOU’RE the one being observed: Make it funny. I myself have tripped, run into things, gotten off the elevator on the wrong floor and taken three or four steps forward and then immediately taken those steps in reverse as I type out an email or text. In times like those you just have to smile, laugh, and if you catch people observing YOU in these moments of embarrassment…go ahead and take a bow
So that’s all I’ve got in the “people watching tips” for today folks. Have a wonderful Monday, smile at someone new, and just remember…Monday only sucks if you let it 😉
