Hello SOTGC community,
Since we are in the New Year, I have been doing some reflection on moments in time that have helped shape who I am today. Do you ever have conversations that make an impact on you and that you still remember years later? I had one of those about 10 years ago that I’d like to share with you.
I was working with an executive at the company I worked for and we were hammering out a communications strategy for a difficult situation. He said to me, “Do you know what the most powerful word in the English language is?” I said I didn’t. “It is YES,” he said and then continued to say that many people believe “NO” but that is wrong as rather than showing strength, “no” shows closed mindedness and fear. However, he shared, it is the power of yes that shows true strength and courage.
As we are beginning the New Year, try to keep that in mind. While you are in meetings, dealing with clients, managing your team…remember that “yes” and allowing yourself and others to try new things is what will makes us grow and prosper. And not just professionally but personally as well.
Now of course, that does not mean be a doormat for people to walk all over you. You’ll use your best judgment, talk things through, and look at the situation from different angles to get to that powerful “yes.”
After practicing this for a while, it will become a habit. And with that habit, I truly believe you will feel an empowerment that you would never get from no.
Here’s to more “yes” in 2014!
