Hello SOTGC community,
One of the buzzwords you may, or may not have heard, a lot in the working environment is “authenticity” and how it plays a role in your success. For those of you who are still figuring out what this means, I wrote this post for you. One of the things I talk a lot about sat the MarenyReid.com site is how to utilize your “authentic value proposition.” Your authentic value proposition means: The intangible, unique traits that you alone possess, that make you stand out from the crowd.
I first started to really think about what authenticity meant in regards to my career in May 2013 at our MAE Global Sales Meeting when we had the fabulous Carla Harris as our keynote speaker. One of her many “pearls” of wisdom was: “Your authenticity is your distinct competitive advantage. NO ONE can you YOU, like you can.” This got me thinking; here I sat in a room of over 130 highly competitive, ambitious, intelligent, and personable surgical devices salespeople. Yet if you asked the manager of every person in that room to tell you “what makes (insert name here) unique?” I bet they’d be able to give you a couple examples of how that person sets themself apart from their peers, and their competition.
As I have entered into the world of entrepreneurism I have noticed this, nothing you do or create is going to be brand new. Every idea and concept you come up with will have been thought of and probably tried before. However, what makes someone succeed where others don’t, is that they have figured out what about their personality and outlook differs from all the others who have gone before (or are going now) and they capitalize on that individual trait.
I bet if you sit back and think about the people in your company, or even your competition, who are very successful you can probably list off a couple things that they do or say that make them stand out in the crowd. And then if you really tried, you could pinpoint what it is that YOU do that’s unique and special, and figure out how to implement that into your professional life to take you to the next level.
If you’re still having trouble figuring out what is authentically YOU, do this. Take out a piece of paper and pen, or for those of you who have atrocious handwriting (like myself) type it out on a word document. Write down a list of the things that your friends and family constantly come to you for. IE are you the person who always has the best ideas for vacation spots, or restaurants to check out, or knows what’s going on in the political world or is up to date on by the minute current events, or knows where to get the best deals from all the stores? Then once you get that list, figure out how you can take that trait and use it to enhance your professional life.
