OK…so I don’t wear purple gloves ALL the time…but when I wash dishes (which is anywhere from once to twice a day) I wear them. Those big, ugly, purple gloves you buy in the grocery store to protect your hands while cleaning are a permanent fixture in my kitchen. Every one of my friends, or house guests, has seen and remarked on them. It’s become a running joke and is one of the quirks about me that is odd, yet some find adorable.
The point of this “super special glimpse into my life” is that we ALL have quirks that make us unique. We all do random and seemingly “weird” things that are part of our individual personalities. Lately I’ve been talking a lot about being your “authentic self” both in your personal and work life. Many times, being taught that we have to be perceived in a certain way leads us to hide these wonderful personality characteristics, or to be ashamed or embarrassed when we’re caught doing them.
One of the most liberating things I have encountered is finding the courage to JUST BE ME. On any given day someone near me will whisper to someone near them “did she just say that?” and it’s part of who I am. To say and do random things that might be funny but are DEFINITELY odd to some people. And I am totally OK with that. Embracing this authentic part of who I am and not feeling the need to hide or be ashamed about it has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
So…what are some of your quirks that you hide? Do you like to say random things like “no running by the pool!” when someone goes racing by you…and you’re no where near a pool? Do you make gushy googlily noises when you see a cute baby or animal? Do you burst out into Disney musical songs at random points of your day? These are all things that are unique to you, that make you interesting and different, and that also put people around you at ease when you feel confident enough to do them because it shows an acceptance of the beauty of “not being perfect” that we all have tried to portray at one point in our life.
So head out today, do something silly and random, and embrace it as your true, authentic self. I guarantee someone near you will dawn a smile that will last them throughout the day, or join in if they are so inclined. And just remember, the most BEAUTIFUL part of who you are, is in being comfortable enough to be EVERYTHING you are…NOT just the “perfect” parts. (click here to tweet that!)
