Hello SOTGC community,
What does StrengthsFinder 2.0, a Neurosurgeon, and a Teppanyaki Chef have in common…? They all found their personal “strength” and they are making money off it.
The inspiration for this post came from a dinner I had with one of my friends awhile ago, who happens to be a Neurosurgeon. We went to a local teppenyaki restaurant and apparently she had never been to one of these before. For those of you not familiar, this is a Japanese restaurant with a big open grill where groups of people sit around, and the Chef not only cooks delicious food, but also entertains you by flipping pieces of food around or lighting them on fire.
Throughout the course of the meal my friend exclaimed over and over again about the talent of the Chef. From flipping pieces of food around to lighting them on fire, she was enthralled and engaged the entire time. I sat there watching this and thinking, “here is someone who operates and saves/enhances lives for her career, and she is fascinated by a Chef doing tricks with food!”
Thinking back on this event it reminds me that we all have our strengths and that what seems like a silly and fun talent to one person (I’m sure the Chef practiced these moves when he started, but now feels it’s second nature) is FACINATING to another person. Especially women, I meet women ALL the time that tell me they would love to own their own business but have a good business idea. So I talk to them for a few minutes about their hobbies, their passions, what they enjoy doing. After about 10 minutes I have a clear idea of HOW they could make money. It turns out…something they feel is a “silly hobby” is something that could (with some help and the right direction) REALLY benefit others with the same interests/needs….AND offer them a rewarding career. THIS is what has inspired me to launch my “SOTGC: Entrepreneur By Design.“ I want to help these creative ladies RECOGNIZE their strengths…and then show them the way to make those strengths into an emotionally and financially rewarding career.
So….what’s your strength? Have you taken the StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment and read about their philosophy and reasoning on WHY we should spend the majority of our time enhancing our strengths (and in this case, something you also love doing), instead of wasting it trying to make our weaknesses just mediocre abilities (IE being stifled in a corporate environment that’s not allowing you to stretch your creative abilities?)
Have you looked at something you do for fun as a hobby, and figured out how you could make money off it? My guess is Perez Hilton started his celebrity trash talking blog just because he had fun doing it. Now his business is worth upwards of $30 million…and all because he took his strength (making funny quips about celebrities and the things they do) and he put it out there for the world to see and share.
A year ago I FINALLY figured out what my TRUE strength was, and then I figured out how I could turn it into a rewarding career that also allows me the creative freedom that I crave as well. I also took the StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment so that when I start to build my team, I make sure I bring in people whose strengths are MY weaknesses, so we have a fully functioning team.
